You probably have heard about Marvel’s plan on releasing Jessica Jones TV shows as a part of their Daredevil universe, but there haven’t been any official confirmations whether they are going to continue their plan or when the show will be released. However, it seems all the wait has ended since it is confirmed that Jessica Jones will air around November the 20th on Netflix, although there isn’t much to say about the release.
Why is Jessica Jones included within Daredevil team, anyway? Well, as a starter, the story of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage (Jessica’s boyfriend), and later on, Iron Fist, is related to one another. If you follow the comic book, the four characters will later on form up a team called as “The Defender”. It seems that Marvel has been slowly paying out the way so The Defender can be a reality. Daredevil is the first character to premiere around April the 10th, followed by Jessica Jones in November. Luke Cage is also on the way for releasing his own production, and it is the Iron Fist, who is in vague as no one has planned something for him. But naturally, the four characters should be present so they can team up.
Jessica Jones alone will be played by Krysten Ritter, followed by several familiar casts, such as Rachael Taylor, Erin Moriarty, Wil Traval, Eka Darville, and Carrie-Anne Moss. David Tennant will also join the crew as Zebediah Kilgrave or The Purple Man, Jessica’s nemesis, who is able to control minds – not to mention that he suffers from psychotic behavior as well. There is also Mike Colter as Luke Cage, Jessica’s boyfriend. For this first season, there will be at least 13 episodes.
The story of Jessica Jones is based on Alias comics (running from 2001 to 2004) by Michael Gaydos and Brian Michael Bendis. Jessica got a superhero power after the car driven by her father crashed into a container of dangerous chemicals (similar to what happened to Matt Murdock, the Daredevil). After the crash, she became an orphan. Things went wrong when the Purple Man captured her and controlled her with his mind-control ability. She then unconsciously did bad things, such as attacking the Avengers’ mansion as well as attacking the police station. When she realized her action, she swore off her superhero abilities and became a private investigator instead. She decided to open Alias Investigations in Hell’s Kitchen, New York, where she investigated cases involving people with superhuman abilities.
Jessica Jones is definitely a unique superhero from Marvel with hot-tempered and bad-ass attitude; not to mention that she also suffers from PTSD and self-loathing. There are a lot of connections between her and other Marvel’s characters. Aside from her similar accidents to Matt Murdock (and the fact that she will be hired by him) and the fact that she is dating Luke Cage, Jessica turns out to be in the same school as Peter Parker. Her father worked for Tony Stark. After her attack to the Avengers’ mansion, she fell into a coma and then taken care of her friend, Carol Danvers, S.H.I.E.L.D agent.
