You probably think that Christmas is always related to white snow and Santa Claus, but there is actually another terror and nightmare that is waiting during this (supposed to be) happy day, especially if you are on the ‘naughty kids lists’ belonging to Santa. Krampus is another evil version of Santa Claus, that will kidnap naughty kids, hang them in the highest tree in the wood, and then eat them – well, at least that’s the myth says about the creature. Hmmm, the real Santa certainly won’t be doing that…I guess this is one of the main reasons why this ancient seasonal myth isn’t really popular because it is just too gory.
This theme is picked for the new upcoming big screen movie, which combines terror, thriller, and definitely horror. Well, there is a little bit of comedy in it, but since it is a black comedy, it doesn’t really count as something fun or hilarious. Also named as Krampus, this movie will focus on the not-so-happy and even bloody Christmas.
It may seem odd that a white Christmas is ‘decorated’ with such black comedy horror movie, but it is actually a perfect combination – just like Halloween. After all, Christmas isn’t all about the cheers and jeers, but also about the black and dark side of human characteristics. If you think that Krampus is similar to the Grinch, you are hugely mistaken. Despite the furry things they both share, they have nothing in common. Krampus is much scarier and gorier than the Grinch. The Grinch is annoying and an ass, obviously, but he won’t eat or torture kids, for sure. The Krampus is based on the German folklore, Krampusnacht, who is basically a demon. So, you get the idea why he is so evil and menacing.
The film is about a family that has lost its family value and everything starts falling apart. The peak is when they have to celebrate Christmas together. To make things worse, they don’t believe in Christmas anymore and for them, having to spend the holiday with people they don’t really like and respect is a nightmare. But then a blizzard happens, power outage hits the neighborhood, and they have to spend (the already dreadful and worse) the night together, they start to notice strange things. They start realizing that something dark has been watching them and the creature obviously enjoys it – which makes things even scarier.
This film is directed by Michael Dougherty, with lists of stars including Toni Collette, Adam Scott, David Koechner, Emjay Anthony, and Allison Tolman. Dougherty claims that this one is a must watch and it is different from other Christmas horror movie because of several scary facts. First of all, it is based on a folklore, so there is a sense of reality and fact about it. And second, Krampus is definitely different than the other horror bogeyman. There is something playful and dark about the guy, and the fact that he enjoys terrorizing people and really has a good time with it is totally scary. Krampus should be available soon in cinemas on December the 4th.
