Fast and Furious has managed to change street car race platform. Started as a regular and ordinary street car racing, the movie has developed into espionage and high packed action flick with its own hardcore fan base. Not many movies are able to do so, so you can consider it as an achievement for such regular theme to maintain its own popularity within the span of 14 years. Even with the death of one of the main characters, the movie still goes on – and producers still think of it as their main high cash source.
Paul Walker may not be with us again since his death, but his presence is definitely deeply felt – and he has contributed a big deal in the success of the series. Starting out in 2001 as simple and regular car racing action, the movie has developed into global heist movie with a touch of espionage. To balance the actions and the special effects, an element of drama is included into the story line, making the movie somehow down to earth while still being packed with high paced actions. It is no wonder if the movie manages to reach top spot in the box office lists.
Although Furious 7 was proven to be quite difficult and challenging with the death of Paul Walker – and the fact that special effect team had to work extra hard to bring Walker ‘back to life’ – the movie was proven to be successful. When you watched the movie, you wouldn’t realize that Walker had actually been gone, and it was in the last minutes you just realized that he hadn’t been around anymore (along with the soundtrack by Whiz Khalifa). And because of the success in Furious 7, the producers decided that they are going to make Furious 8. You probably raise your eyebrows for this news, but that’s what really happens in Hollywood movie industry – when it is still making money, it is still going on.
You can’t really blame the producers, considering that Furious 7 managed to produce $1.5 billion from all over the world, which means that it was the highest earning the series ever made. Furious 8 has been planned to have new story plot without Paul Walker involvement anymore. When Neal H. Moritz, the franchise producer from this series, was asked, he answered that the strength of the story comes from the character. And since the character of Paul Walker (Brian O’Conner) has moved on, the producers are considering other characters perspective and develop the story from there. They believe that they have a lot of potentials, and they are going to work on it.
It is pretty logical, considering that this film has a lot of promising characters. Aside from Vin Diesel and also Michelle Rodriguez, Furious 8 will be back with the same villain Jason Statham. Dwayne Johnson will be coming back again, and it is even possible that the setting will take place in New York.
Well, the new plot remains unknown and hasn’t been revealed, but if the producers are pretty optimistic about it, then so be it. We just have to wait and see for the new (and hopefully promising) film.
