You have to admire guts of the creators of The Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 9. The way they made its story unfold so far have left us awestruck and dumbfounded. It is needless to say that The Walking Dead, as a TV series, is not another brainless zombie apocalypse show-off. With their latest episode, they have once again taken their show to new heights. Revealing twists and turns least when you expect it. With the death of important characters at regular intervals, we got kind of accustomed to the feeling, but somewhere deep within in us, we all mourn, when the time comes to bid adieu to yet another character. But this time around, with the death of Tyreese, The show has proved that they are not the ones to compromise when it comes to delivering a hard-hitting scene.
Director Greg Nicotero and writer Scott Gimple goes to extraordinary lengths and brings the death of this major character in such a manner that an audience can’t help but feel being in the shoes of Tyreese himself. His death was shown through the lens of his character, showing each and every gruesome detail in his point-of-view.
What made Tyreese such a likable character is his detachment from the usual Survivor mentality that most of the other characters possess. Chad L. Coleman played the role with such grace and humility that almost everyone came to relate to a mental state that he was going through. Direct contradiction of his appearance to his nature won hearts of fans all over. Every dramatic turn of the event wore him out more than the other survivors.
One aspect that captivates us the most in is how his death has been shown. In place of visions of Zombies lusting for human flesh, this scene has been structured in such a way that transcends beyond normal perception, and induces a dream-like hallucinatory feeling that doesn’t make a sudden strong impact, but lingers long in the mind of its viewers. There are images of photographs and blood-smeared walls and a framed painting of a quiet, serene looking house gives away introductory scenes of Tyreese’s death.
There are moments in The Walking Dead Season 5 episode 9 when the inevitability of Tyreese’s death becomes elusive to the general audience and becomes something else. But that is where the makers of the show capitalize and manage to deliver the shocking and unexpected event without using any of the conventional methods that we are used to watching. Since, his death is shown from a personal perspective, it might take a while for the fact to sink in that Tyreese is indeed dead.
The point-of-view style is extensively used in this episode and in the most remarkable and effective way possible. Unexpected shifting of scene from Noah’s house to Shire wilt estate give us momentary hope that there might be a chance of Tyreese staying alive now that Rick, Michele, and Glenn are scavenging the estate and debating their upcoming move. The Walking Dead Season 5 episode 9 succeeds at what it sets out to do. It establishes a specific set of expectations as to what might come next and gives its characters individual goals that does not simply extend to being alive.
